High Sheriff to proclaim Gerrards Cross Farmers’ Market

The High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire, Alexander Boswell will proclaim the first Gerrards Cross Farmers’ Market at 11am on Wednesday 13 September.

Local resident Mary Berry, one of the UK’s best- known and respected cookery writers and broadcaster will formally open the market on West Common.

The Farmers’ Market is run by Thames Valley Farmers’ Market Co-operative at the invitation of David Baldwin, Lord of the Manor of Chalfont St Peter. It is held under the grant of King Henry III to Ranulph Briton on 23 April 1229. This allows the Lord of the Manor to hold a market on his land, which includes West Common in Gerrards Cross.

The High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire, who is a strong advocate of locally-grown produce, is supporting this initiative.  "We have to get away from food products which are being imported to this country and which we are obliged to consume thanks to the supermarket chains,“ he says. “It is ridiculous to import food from thousands of miles away when we are more than able to grow it locally. We have little control over the way other countries produce their food products. In my view local is best, every time."

David Baldwin, the Lord of the Manor of Chalfont St. Peter, is looking forward to the inaugural market. "It seems most appropriate to have a local food market run by Thames Valley Farmers' Market Co-operative.  Gerrards Cross Farmers' Market offers people a great opportunity to buy fresh and delicious food in season, and be reconnected with the farming community."

Gerrards Cross Farmers’ Market will be held every second Wednesday of the month from 10.30am – 2.30pm on West Common, Packhorse Road. A wide range of produce including fresh locally-grown vegetables, salads and fruit, free range and organic meat, speciality breads, cakes and pastries, fish, cheeses and preserves will be on sale.
