Oxfordshire These
days we’re all counting the carbs. That’s not carbohydrates,
it’s the carbon emissions of what we do, including the
processes used to create the food we eat.
Oxfordshire County Council is leading a countywide
initiative to cut carbon emissions and reduce waste.
You can do your bit by buying food and drink from your
local farmers’ market, farm shops and delis. At markets you
can talk to farmers to find out how many miles their produce
has travelled.
Take a reusable shopping bag with you and buy loose fruit
and vegetables. Re-use old paper bags if you want to keep
soil from potatoes off your tomatoes. Only buy as much food
as you need, there’s no point in wasting it!
Many restaurants feature ‘local produce’ on their menus,
so ask where it’s come from.

In future many producers and retailers will be carbon
labelling their products. This will mean measuring the
impact of all the processes used in growing, rearing and
producing food and drink, not just the miles the produce has
travelled from the farm to your plate.
